The Importance of Martin Luther King To Us White Folk …   1 comment

Martin Luther King worked not only to save the Black population of the United States from racism and prejudice. I mean, that’s the way it started out. But looking back on King’s legacy today, on the day that we honor him across the nation, it becomes obvious that he was not only working for the rights and freedoms of Blacks, but also for the rights and freedoms of Whites and all the other ethnic groups that make up the population of this country.

Sometimes that’s a little difficult to wrap our minds around.

But when one group within a population is oppressed, everyone within the population is oppressed, living within a power struggle and the misconception that one person is better than another. And to base that power struggle on skin color? The people doing the oppressing have to work very hard to keep the illusion of betterment alive. The people being oppressed have to work very hard to keep their dignity, to regain their freedom. When the illusion of oppression, status, wealth, pedigree, whatever, is taken away, what is left is a group of human beings. All equal. All beautiful. All alive.

Everyone in the country, no matter your background, color, or place of origin, owes a bit of their freedom to Martin Luther King.

So send him a good thought and big thank you for bringing us a little bit further into the light.

  1. He didn’t just inspire us to fight racial discrimination – he has inspired countless people to fight prejudices and discriminations of all natures.
