Killing Ants … 3 comments
I’ve been wiping down the counters in the kitchen and killing quite a few ants in the process. I wish they would just listen and go away when I tell them to. But no, they just keep marching from the point of entrance to the kitchen counter top, steady, on their misison. Is it their mission to get wiped off the planet by me?

Oh, I’m not in a hurry, but when I tried to card them they go up my arm instead of up the refrigerator. Fast little buggers. It’s colder today, maybe they will slow down!

Flick them into a steep-sided glass cup or bowl. You’re right that you can’t just keep them on the surface of the card.
Break their scent trail, and they’ll stop coming. The reason they’re all coming in the same place is because one intrepid ant, perhaps months ago, found its way in, found some food, and then left a scent trail on the way out to tell all the other ants to come in and partake of the feast. So if you can stop them smelling the “food here” trail, they’ll stop following it.
I do it two ways – first I wipe down the path they follow with a sponge, and then I put something smelly on the scent trail where it enters the house.
Anyway, are you really in such a hurry that you can’t pick them up with an index card and fling them outside before you wipe down the counter? I know it’s a hassle, but if it’s bothering you to kill them, there is an easy way to avoid it.
