Words Like Weird … 2 comments
As I surf around the net, I’ve been noticing how openly people have been using the word weird to describe something they are uncomfortable with. I did a little post on the PUMA on one of my other blogs yesterday and I read a bunch of posts by other bloggers about this new little electric getting around vehicle and the word weird popped up quite a bit.
I thought, how limited. If you label something as weird, it’s hard to think of it otherwise. If you label something weird, then it’s value is diminished. If you label something weird in a public forum you are putting peer pressure on your friends and colleagues to do the same. Labeling something weird means that you can’t see its potential.
So, I say, just stop using words like weird to describe things that could possibly develop into something cool – like do its part to save the planet.

I can’t say that most things I like would be considered mainstream, but I would love it if they were ;)
Weird as we know it is wonderful. But weird to a majority of people is not. Which is why I think most people should stop using it as a way to be dismissive of something that doesn’t fit in their box.
If we’re going to survive on the planet, we’ve got to stop labeling things as weird. Otherwise change won’t happen at a pace that we need.
Of course, weird can be taken to mean “fated.” And to me, weird is wonderful. I don’t think everything we love can ever be, nor should ever be, mainstream.
